How a Skins game works
Compare every participating player’s score on the hole. One unique lowest score wins the skin. If the low score is shared, nobody wins that hole. With additive carryovers, an unclaimed skin joins the next hole’s skin. This unique-low and carryover structure is also described in the PGA TOUR’s Skins format explainer.
A tie between higher scores does not block a lower outright winner. With scores of 3, 4 and 4, the player with 3 wins. With 3, 3 and 5, nobody wins.
A three-hole example
Alice, Bob and Chris play three selected holes, with no allowances, additive carryovers and a game unit of 1.
| Hole | Alice | Bob | Chris | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | 4 | 5 | Low tie; 1 skin carries |
| 2 | 5 | 4 | 6 | Bob claims 2 skins |
| 3 | 3 | 4 | 4 | Alice claims 1 skin |
Bob claims two skins; Alice claims one; Chris claims none. TeeLab’s game-point change also considers the number of opponents: each opponent loses one unit per claimed skin, and the winner gains those units. On hole 2 Bob gains 4, while Alice and Chris each lose 2. On hole 3 Alice gains 2, while Bob and Chris each lose 1.
Final game-point changes: Alice 0, Bob +3, Chris −3. Skins claimed: Alice 1, Bob 2, Chris 0.
Carryovers and an unfinished last claim
With carryovers off, a tied hole remains unawarded and the next hole is worth only its own skin. With carryovers on, two consecutive tied holes make the next outright win worth three skins. Any participant can claim them; the winner need not have tied the earlier holes.
In TeeLab, a tie on the final selected hole leaves the remaining carry unawarded. It is not automatically shared, assigned to the leader or resolved by a playoff. Skins also has no extra “validation” hole: an outright winner receives the available skins immediately.
Skins settings in TeeLab
- Players: 2–100 individual participants; this mode does not create teams.
- Holes: all course holes or a selected set.
- Default: no allowances, additive carryovers and a game unit of 1.
- Optional allowances: set each player’s strokes received on par-3, par-4 and par-5 holes. Options are 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2. Comparisons then use recorded strokes minus that allowance.
For example, a recorded 4 with a 0.5 allowance compares as 3.5. These are organizer-selected allowances, not an automatically calculated official Handicap Index.
TeeLab reads the same recorded strokes for every configured game. Missing scores keep a hole pending; they are not automatically treated as zero, par or a concession. Set the rules before play and check the results before confirming them.
Skins, Match Play or Stableford?
Skins asks who was uniquely lowest on each hole, with an optional accumulation of tied holes. Match Play compares opponents by holes won. Stableford gives each player points relative to the hole’s target rather than requiring an outright win. Choose Nassau when you want three separate front-nine, back-nine and overall comparisons.
Personal rounds can use these formats without club credits. Optional club credits are internal numerical records with no monetary value. They require platform-granted advanced eligibility, president activation and an event made up entirely of that club’s members. Credits cannot be purchased, cashed out or redeemed. Read the terms.
