Nassau: three comparisons inside one round.

A difficult opening nine need not decide everything. Nassau keeps a separate result for the front nine, back nine and all 18 holes.

Three segments, agreed rules

A Nassau separates the front nine, back nine and overall round. The organizer still needs to specify the scoring method and segment weights. For example, the SCGA Team Play manual describes a four-ball Nassau with different weights for the nines and the full match. There is no reason to assume every event uses that same schedule.

TeeLab’s fixed-player or fixed-team Nassau compares holes won, and each of its three segment results uses the same configured game unit. A won hole contributes +1 to your side’s match balance, a lost hole −1, and a tied hole 0. A large stroke margin on one hole still counts as one won hole.

A full-round example

Alice and Bob play 18 holes with no allowances and a game unit of 1. Below are their completed hole outcomes; “tied” means they returned equal strokes on that hole.

Nassau example: completed segment outcomes
SegmentAlice winsBob winsTied holesAlice’s game points
Front nine423+1
Back nine234−1
Overall657+1

Alice wins the front nine by two holes, loses the back nine by one, and wins the overall comparison by one. Those are three separate results, each worth one game unit—not the size of the winning margin.

Final game-point changes: Alice +1, Bob −1. Calculation for Alice: +1 − 1 + 1 = +1.

Tied segments and extra matches

A tied hole contributes zero. If a nine or the overall match finishes tied, that segment creates zero game-point change. Winning one nine and losing the other does not necessarily tie the overall match: the overall result uses all the won and lost holes.

TeeLab does not automatically create presses, additional matches or sudden-death playoffs. It calculates the configured three segments. New Nassau games require a complete 18-hole course and do not offer a hole-selection control. Holes 1–9 are the front nine even if your round starts on hole 10.

Fixed teams and the rotating-partner variant

Use two individual players or four players arranged into two teams. With fixed teams, each side’s lower score on the hole determines the hole result; partners’ strokes are not added together.

In TeeLab’s rotating-team variant, the first pairing is random. Subsequent pairings place the previous hole’s best and worst players together against the middle two. Ties use earlier completed-hole results, then the initial draw order.

Each player on the winning side adds +1 to their personal segment total, each player on the losing side adds −1, and a tied hole adds 0. At the end of each nine and the full round, every pair of players compares those personal totals: a higher total earns one game unit from that opponent; equal totals create no change. This personal accumulation is different from a fixed-team Nassau.

Set up Nassau in TeeLab

  1. Start with a complete 18-hole course and select two players or four players in teams.
  2. For teams, choose fixed or rotating partners before play.
  3. Leave allowances off, or explicitly choose each player’s par-3, par-4 and par-5 allowance from 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2.
  4. Review the game unit, then record each hole’s strokes as usual.

Allowances subtract from recorded strokes before comparing players or team lows. They are organizer-selected settings, not an automatic official handicap calculation.

TeeLab reads the same recorded strokes for every configured game. Missing scores keep a hole pending; they are not automatically treated as zero, par or a concession. Set the rules before play and check the results before confirming them.

For shorter selected-hole games, compare Skins and Stableford.

Personal rounds can use these formats without club credits. Optional club credits are internal numerical records with no monetary value. They require platform-granted advanced eligibility, president activation and an event made up entirely of that club’s members. Credits cannot be purchased, cashed out or redeemed. Read the terms.
